If you’re not yet a certified echocardiography tech, here are the steps you need to take to be one of the many people filling jobs in this important, well-paid, and high-demand field.
Echocardiology programs come in two primary forms, which you can find at your local community college: associate’s degrees (which will take approximately two years to complete) and certificate programs (which take around a year). These teach the technicalities of the role and will give you an idea of what this job will require of you through coursework, lab studies, and some hands-on work.
Once you have your education, you’ll need to be certified as an echocardiography technician to get hired. You can pursue your certification through the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) or Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI).
The first step to achieving any certification through ARDMS is Sonography Principles and Instrumentation (SPI), which tests for basic knowledge required for sonography work (and you can now take the SPI from home!). Once you’ve passed that test, you can pursue one of the following certifications: Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer (RDCS), Fetal Echocardiography (FE), or Pediatric Echocardiography (PE).
With a certification through ARDMS, you’re required to pay an annual fee to maintain it. Once every six years, you’ll be expected to re-certify.
CCI offers a variety of certifications in sonography, including echocardiography, as well as advanced certification options for those looking to progress professionally. CCI also requires a yearly fee to maintain certification. Like ARDMS, you have to pay an annual fee to maintain your certification, and, every three years, you will have to provide CCI evidence of continued education.
